... è il primo romanzo scritto da Umberto Eco, edito per la prima volta nel 1980. Dopo aver scritto moltissimi saggi, Eco decide di scrivere il suo primo romanzo, dopo alcuni anni di meticolosa preparazione, cimentandosi in un genere abbastanza difficile come il giallo, in particolare con il sottogenere deduttivo.
L'opera è ambientata nel medioevo e viene presentata come il manoscritto di un anziano monaco che ha trascritto un'avventura vissuta da novizio, molti decenni addietro, in compagnia del suo maestro presso un monastero benedettino dell'Italia settentrionale.
La narrazione, suddivisa in sette giornate, scandite dai ritmi della vita monastica, vede protagonisti Guglielmo da Baskerville, frate francescano, e il novizio benedettino Adso da Melk, il narratore della storia.

Luciano Berio (October 24, 1925 – May 27, 2003) was an Italian composer. He is noted for his experimental work (in particular his 1968 composition Sinfonia for voices and orchestra) and also for his pioneering work in electronic music.
... He was born in Oneglia (now Borgo d'Oneglia, a small village 3 km N of Imperia). He was taught the piano by his father and grandfather who were both organists. During World War II he was conscripted into the army, but on his first day he injured his hand while learning how a gun worked. He spent time in a military hospital, before fleeing to fight in anti-Nazi groups.
... Following the war, Berio studied at the Milan Conservatory under Giulio Cesare Paribeni and Giorgio Federico Ghedini. He was unable to continue studying the piano because of his injured hand, and so instead he concentrated on composition. In 1947 came the first public performance of one of his works, a suite for piano.
... Berio made a living at this time accompanying singing classes, and it was in doing this that he met American mezzo-soprano Cathy Berberian, whom he married shortly after graduating (they divorced in 1964). Berio would write many pieces exploiting her versatile and unique voice. [...]

Catherine Anahid Berberian (Attleboro, Massachusetts, July 4, 1925 - Rome, Italy, March 6, 1983) was a composer, mezzo-soprano singer, and vocalist.
From 1950 to 1966 she was married to composer Luciano Berio, who deconstructed her voice in Thema (Omaggio a Joyce) (1958) and wrote his Circles (1960) and Recital I (for Cathy) (1972) for her. In addition Sylvano Bussotti, John Cage, Hans Werner Henze and Igor Stravinsky wrote works for her voice.
She interpreted contemporary avant-garde music, Armenian folk songs, Monteverdi, The Beatles, and her own compositions. Her best known work is her Stripsody (1966), in which she exploits her vocal technique using comic-book sounds.

I miss him terribly!
It is thirteen years ago on the day (and not 12, as I thought) that Manos Hadjidákis has passed-away. He was one of the 20th century's very best songwriters. Not for what he was mainly known abroad [Never on Sunday, and such, that he came to despise long before the end of his life] but for all that, which he had offered irregularly to his countrymen.
Manos Hadjidákis hated pomposity, indoctrination, oppression of any kind, commercialism, the "fans", the song as a form of lolly-pop consumption... He wanted to provoke, inspire, sharpen -- if that's not an unfortunate word -- our sensitivity. I'd say that he died of a broken heart.
Pity (or, was it?) that he would remain Greek, to the bone, working more-or-less stubbornly around the age-long Mediterranean musical idioms, and the folk-rhythms of his native land.
13 meager years have gone-by; and yet, we still hurt because of your absence. We light a modest bee-wax candle to your memory, Manos.
